Spectral type M8.5. L = 0.003 LSol. Member of Taurus-Auriga star-forming region. Age 1-2 Myr.
Joncour et al. (2017) deem KPNO-Tau 9 to be gravitationally bound to protostar XEST08-049, which in turn would be the tertiary star of HQ Tau system lying 11,882 AUs away. KPNO-Tau 9 itself would be 12,571 AUs away from HQ Tau, turning out being part of a complex multiple system.
